About Us

My parents set up Fowey Fish in 1983, I came in to mangage the business in October 2000 after many years working in Accountancy and Management Accountancy.

In the first year here I wrote our very first website and started our mail order service.  The mail order service is now a very important part of our business as it keeps us fully employed during the winter months, when we would otherwise be very quiet - we were very dependant upon the tourist industry both retail and wholesale (restaurants and hotels).

We mainly source our wonderful fresh fish from Looe Day Boat Market where the small fishing boats, trawlers and small hand liners, go out to sea on a daily basis and return that night.  The fish is then sold on the market the following morning and "lands" in our shop between 10am and 11am ready for selection for mail orders, wholesale orders and for our shop.  We also buy fish from small boats that fish out of Fowey, Par and Charlestown.  We source our lobsters and crabs from Gary Eglington, who fishes out of Newquay, his Dad, Ron, also catches great Hook and Line Pollack (in season!).

We totally support South West Handline Fishermen's Association and buy mackerel and bass from registered boats, when available.

As we are a small business we can hand on heart say where and when our fresh fish was caught, not many other retailers / on-line fish sellers can say that. We do not freeze fish and then de-frost for it for re-sale (we leave this questionable practice to the large supermarkets!).

In our shop window we display and sell our locally caught fish, which is labelled as such; when we have sourced fish from elsewhere it is just labelled with species and the price. To me LOCAL means caught locally i.e. in the locality 10-15 miles radius would seem appropriate - fish bought from Plymouth or Newlyn markets is not local fish and shouldn't be sold as local! By buying from local sources we support local families as well as reducing our carbon footprint.

(Enough of me on my soap box!)
